Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI)

Cary Library Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Statement

The Cary Library is committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in our community. This commitment is reflected in the library’s Mission, Core Values, and Guiding Principles, but more importantly, it is reflected in the staff we hire, the collections we build, the programs we offer, and the services we provide.

The work of advancing racial and social equity begins with the recognition and affirmation of the dignity of individuals; those we work with and those we serve.  Regardless of age, cultural background, ethnicity, family status, language, national origin, disability, race, color, religion, education, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, health, socioeconomic, and immigration status—at Cary Library, all are welcome.

Our ability to serve our community now and in the future depends on a willingness to listen, learn, and evolve. To that end, the library has a staff IDEAS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Staffing) Team to provide a collaborative space to continue ongoing DEI work. If you have suggestions for how to make Cary Library more equitable and inclusive we want to hear from you. You can reach the IDEAS Team through our
 suggestion form.

Cary Library Intellectual Freedom Statement

The Cary Library recognizes your freedom to read and your right to materials that promote open inquiry, critical thinking, and diversity in thought and expression. Because the Cary Library serves everyone, differing viewpoints and a diversity of perspectives are to be expected. Living in a free society affords us access to information unimpeded by others’ beliefs or viewpoints. Not every book will appeal to every reader, but it may have value to others. We respect your right to determine what you read, but stand against efforts to censor library collections.

Cary Library Accessibility Statement
