Description Residence of Lewis Hunt, Massachusetts Avenue between Hunt Road and Slocum Road.

"Torn down in 1920s. Lewis Hunt came to Lexington in 1884 or 1883 and purchased this property in 1883 from Levi Prosser who in turn had bought it in 1864 from Sidney G. Davis. He had bought it in 1857 and it may be the same house which in later years was back of the big house. The big house was probably built by Sidney Davis.

William Hunt (1955) said William A. Tower lived there but I find no record of ownership. He also said that Prosser bought horses for the government during the Civil War and the big barn often had 50 horses in it. I suspect he rented from Sidney G. Davis.

William A. Tower came to Lexington in 1855 and bought a small house on one-quarter acre land in the Centre. He bought the big estate in 1862 and the big house on Pelham Road is first assessed in 1863. He could have been a short-time tenant in the Hunt place."

(Handwritten note by EBW, Jr.: "From the March 8, 1884 paper (Middlesex Townsman, I think): 'Mr. Lewis Hunt of Salem has bought the residence of Levi Prosser, Esq. on Main Street, together with 10 acres of land. We understand that Mr. Hunt proposes to move to town about April 1.' Later item adds: Conveyance from Levi Prosser to Lewis Hunt of Salem. $12,000 land and buildings, about 10 acres on Main Street and bounded by land of Griffiths, Norris and Viles.")
