Tani notes, "I am interested in dance, as it is an art form that always marvels the human body and the inner self. I take a special interest in dancers who are not professional, [and]…thrive to capture the interaction between people who dance together, the play between each individual and the group, the uniqueness and personality of each person as it comes through while everybody is making the same movement."
Girls is based on photographs Tani took during a dance recital at the Lexington School of Ballet (LSB) in 2003, which included her daughter, a long-time dancer. Since creating a first version of Girls in 2007, Tani has made numerous further studies in different compositions and materials – including this one.
