Since her earliest years, Sara Sue Pennell has painted in one medium or another. Her grandmother, Sara Hayes Fawcett, who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, was Sara Sue's first teacher. Sara Sue followed in her grandmother’s footsteps and also studied at the Academy, then at the Barnes Foundation when it was in Merion, Pennsylvania. She started using pastels seriously when she studied with Janet Monafo in the 1980s. A long time member of the Concord Art Association and the Copley Society (in which she is has the rank of Copley Artist), she is now a Master Pastellist in the Pastel Society of America.
